Anonymous is an unofficial and unorganized group of individuals who work on getting information to the people. They work to get corrupt organizations recognized and exploiting government plans and ideas. They provide the people with information and promote free speech that may otherwise be blocked or discouraged agaisnt. One exampe of this is when Megaupload, the once known popular data sharing site, was shut down. Anonymous attacked some larger corperations along with the FBI website. Along with the stop SOPA campaign, they are trying to get people to help and speak out against the government. This was reported as its "largest attack ever" and i'm sure that it won't be the last.
