What's the Difference Between 3G and 4G?

By, Liz Patt
The terms 4G and 3G have been tossed around lately, mostly by cell phone providers like Verizon Wireless, T-mobile, Sprint, and AT&T. You may be wondering what the terms mean. The term 3G means third generation and 4G means fourth generation, same as 1G or 2G. The majority of cell phones today use 3G and the last phone that was used excessivly before 3G was the original I-phone back in 2007. 3G phones have the ability to reach speeds up to 3 Megabits per second (Mbps) however, speeds commonly only reach 1Mbps. The majority of 4G phones are not technically 4G at all, but a more advanced type of 3G. Sprint, the phone company that says they are in the 4G technology, only two known phones they carry have legit 4G service. All the other companies such as Verizon and AT&T, fall under the category of "Pre-4G."
